Bhubaneswar: A couple, Sanjana Periwal and Sanjay Periwal, allegedly attempted suicide in a flat at Chintamaniswar in Odisha capital on Friday.
According to sources, the 39-year-old woman was found hanging while her husband (42) was lying unconscious in the flat. He allegedly attempted to end his life by consuming poison after coming to know about her death.
The duo was rescued and rushed to a nearby private hospital. While Sanjana was declared dead, Sanjay, who owns a garments shop, is stated to be critical. They allegedly took the extreme step, the reason behind which is yet to be ascertained, while their children were away in school. The couple was married for 19 years and had a 17-year-old daughter and a 10-year-old son.
Police said Sanjana usually accompanied her husband to their garments shop in Budheswari Colony every day. She excused herself on Friday and said that she would arrive late. When she did not reach the shop, Sanjay sent his nephew to their flat to check on her and he found the woman hanging from a ceiling fan. Sanjay rushed back home. Finding her dead, he went to the washroom and swallowed liquid cleaner.
Domestic discord is suspected to have driven her to take her life. The couple reportedly had a fight before Sanjay left for their shop.
