Balasore: A couple was duped of over Rs 12 lakh as miscreants allegedly hacked their bank accounts and withdrew the amount in the district.
The matter came to light when the couple Samik Pradhan and Jyotsna of Nilagiri in the district had gone to the branch of Indusind Bank at Fakirmohan Golei in Balasore to deposit Rs 5,000 in the saving account of Samik.
Earlier, the couple had opened fixed deposit accounts and deposited Rs 5 lakh each. The amounts were set to get maturity in 2023 and 2024. But, during their visit, the bank officials told them that they had already dissolved the fixed deposit accounts and withdrawn the amounts.
Surprised by the information, they sought the details which were furnished by the bank officials. Samik then told the officials to block his saving account which had a deposit of Rs 2.45 lakh. But the officials reportedly told him to get police permission for the purpose.
Samik rushed to Sahadevkhunta police station to file a complaint. On the way, he received a message from the bank that Rs 2.45 lakh had been withdrawn from his saving account.
Samik filed the complaint at the police station and cyber police of Balasore in this regard.
“We lost our total deposit of Rs 12.45 lakh in the bank. Despite our pleas, the bank officials did not cooperate with us to trace the amount or ascertain how it was withdrawn,” he told a local TV channel. He suspected the role of bank officials in the fraud.
The bank officials, on the other hand, said they did not have any role in the transaction and pointed out that the accounts might have been hacked by some cyber hackers.
