Bhubaneswar: Five days after being set on fire by his father and losing his wife, Dinabandhu Rout (40) succumbed to burns at SCB Medical College and Hospital (MCH) in Odisha’s Cuttack city on Friday.
Following a quarrel, 70-year-old Gobardhan Rout poured petrol on his son and daughter-in-law and set them on fire while both were having dinner at Barisinga village in Baranga at around 10 pm on December 1.
The couple suffered over 60 per cent burn injuries and were rescued by neighbours. They were rushed to SCB MCH and later shifted to a private hospital, where Sasmita Rout aka Puja (37) died. Dinabandhu was then again shifted back to SCB MCH.
Police attributed the incident to financial dispute between father and son, who also objected to his habit of spending money on smoking ganja. Gobardhan, who has been arrested, reportedly confessed to having committed the crime due to sudden provocation under the influence of ganja.
The couple were parents to a five-year-old son, who had a close shave on that day since he was sleeping with his great-grandmother in another room.
