Sundargarh: A Special Vigilance Court has sentenced a retired ASI of police to rigorous imprisonment for 2 years in a bribe case in Odisha’s Sundargarh district.
As per the case, the Vigilance had arrested Udayanath Swain, retired ASI of Balinga outpost under Hemgir police station in the district while accepting bribe from a complainant to help him in a police case. Following investigation, the Vigilance had filed the chargesheet in the court.
After hearing the case, Special Judge, Vigilance, Sundargarh convicted Swain under PC Act,1988 and sentenced him to undergo rigorous imprisonment (RI) for a period of 2 years and imposed a fine of Rs 3,000. In default of payment of fine, Swain will undergo further rigorous imprisonment for 3 months.
The Court also sentenced him to undergo rigorous imprisonment for one year and imposed a fine of Rs 2,000 for the offence U/s 7 PC Act, 1988. In default of payment of fine, the former ASI has to undergo further RI for 2 months more. Both the sentences are to run concurrently.
Odisha Vigilance will now move the competent authority for stoppage of pension of Swain following his conviction.
