Koraput: The Fast Track Court at Jeypore in Odisha’s Koraput district on Tuesday convicted an accused in the case of rape of a minor girl and sentenced him to 38 years of rigorous imprisonment (RI). The court also imposed a penalty of Rs 40,000 on the convict.
As per the case, the convict, identified as Sushant Kandapan of Sana Gadabalasa Colony under Bandhu Gaon police limits, tried to kidnap the girl while she was returning home from tuition in 2017. As she shouted for help, the locals rushed to the spot and Sushant managed to flee.
Later, Sushant succeeded in another kidnap attempt and took her to a forest where he raped her. He also took pictures of the act. Subsequently, the convict raped the girl by blackmailing her with the pictures and threatened her of killing her parents if she informed them.
After hearing the statement of the victim and 13 witnesses in the case, the court announced its judgment. The court also ordered the convict to pay a compensation of Rs 3 lakh through District Legal Services Authority to the victim.
