New Delhi: To provide clarity on people getting infected after taking two doses of vaccine, the government released data on Wednesday showing all details.
It was seen that more than 21,000 people have tested COVID-19 positive after taking the first dose while 5,500 have been infected after both doses.
Overall, around 1.1 crore doses of Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin have been administered while 11 crore doses of Serum’s Covishield have been given till now.
ICMR’s Director General Balram Bhargava pointed out that 0.04 per cent of 17,37,178 individuals, who received two doses of Covaxin, got the infection. For Covishield, it was 0.03 per cent of 1,57,32,754 people.
Bhargava reiterated that vaccines prevent death and severe infection.
He termed this as “a very small” number.
“This is a very small number and not at all worrisome. Secondly, the highly transmissible second wave also contributes minuscule to the percentage, so this could have been even zero per cent,” he added.
NITI Aayog Member (Health) V K Paul noted that there’s risk even after vaccination and urged people to follow COVID-appropriate behaviour.
Coming to Covaxin vs Covishield, the government maintains that both vaccines are effective against COVID-19. It can also be seen that the numbers are also identical in terms of infection after vaccination.
