COVID-19: How Protected Are Fully-Vaccinated People?

Sydney: It’s been almost a year since COVID-19 vaccines were rolled out in phases in different parts of the world. That’s enough time to gauge how effective vaccines are in the fight against the deadly coronavirus.

An Australian study has found that fully-vaccinated people are 16 times less likely to end up in intensive care unit (ICU) beds or die from COVID-19 than those who aren’t immunised.

According to data compiled by health authorities in Australia’s most populous state New South Wales, 16 out of 100,000 people who are yet to get jabbed have had to be admitted to ICU or died after contracting coronavirus. In comparison, less than 1 in every 100,000 fully-vaccinated people have faced serious, life-threatening COVID.

A separate study conducted in Texas showed unvaccinated people are 20 times more likely to die after contracting COVID than those who are fully protected.

In a four-week study in the American state, it was found that the risk of COVID-related death is 48 times higher for unvaccinated people in their 30s and 63 times higher for people in their 40s.
