COVID-19: India Now Ranked Second Worst-Hit Country

New Delhi: A record addition of 90,802 cases overnight took India’s COVID-19 tally past 42 lakh to 42,04,614 on Monday. With this, India surpassed Brazil to become the second worst-hit country by the pandemic.

This was the second consecutive day that the country registered over 90,000 new infections in 24 hours.

India has been reporting the highest single-day surge in COVID-19 cases globally for nearly a month, according to the World Health Organization.

Besides, the Union Health Ministry informed on Monday that 1,016 more patients had succumbed to the infection across the country in the past 24 hours, taking the toll to 71,642. The fatality rate stood at 1.7 per cent.

At present, there are 8,82,542 active cases in the country (20.9 per cent of the total cases) and the recovery rate stands at 77.32 per cent. Also, 32,50,429 patients in the country have recovered so far with over 69,000 recoveries recorded in the last 24 hours.

The positivity rate stands at 12.6 per cent as compared to Sunday’s 8.2 per cent.

According to the ICMR, a cumulative total of 4,95,51,507 samples have been tested up till date including Sunday’s 7,20,362 samples.
