COVID-19 Infection Likely To Witness Sharp Spike In ‘Second Peak’: WHO

The World Health Organization (WHO) on Monday warned of a second peak in coronavirus infection in countries where the virus is declining.

The infection rate could rise at a rapid pace in the next peak, the health body warned.

Since the countries are easing restrictions too soon, there are chances that the COVID-19 virus could re-emerge in the months to come. Therefore, countries especially in Europe and North America need to ensure health safety measures to prepare for the havoc.

“When we speak about a second wave classically what we often mean is there will be a first wave of the disease by itself, and then it recurs months later. And that may be a reality for many countries in a number of months’ time,” WHO emergencies head Dr Mike Ryan told the media.

Notably, the first wave of coronavirus pandemic is not over yet as infection rate is still spiralling up in Central and South America, South Asia and Africa.

However, those countries where the pandemic has completely subsided could experience another peak in the infection rate soon this year, he added.
