COVID-19 Third Wave Expected In 6 To 8 Weeks: AIIMS Chief

New Delhi: India is certain to face the “inevitable” third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in the next six to eight weeks, AIIMS chief Dr Randeep Guleria said in view of unlocking in various states after weeks of strict restrictions.

“As we have started unlocking, there is again a lack of Covid-appropriate behaviour. We don’t seem to have learnt from what happened between the first and the second wave. Again crowds are building up… people are gathering. It will take some time for the number of cases to start rising at the national level. But it could happen within next six to eight weeks… may be a little longer,” Dr Guleria was quoted as saying by NDTV.

“It all depends on how we go ahead in terms of Covid-appropriate behaviour and preventing crowds,” the AIIMS chief added.

A raging second wave of the pandemic saw India scream for the shortage of hospital beds and oxygen supplies in different parts of the country. The scarcity caught the attention of the whole world and several countries came forward with assistance.

Restrictions in the movement were imposed in most of the states, which are slowly unlocking in view of a dip in the number of infections.
