COVID Alarm: China-Returnee Tests Positive For Coronavirus In Gujarat

Ahmedabad: Adding to India’s concerns over rising COVID cases in several countries, a man who recently returned from China tested positive for coronavirus in Gujarat’s Bhavnagar.

His sample has been sent to a Gandhinagar lab for genome sequencing.

The 34-year-old businessman, who had travelled to China for work-related purpose, returned to India on December 19.

The Bhavnagar municipal corporation has ramped up COVID-19 testing and other precautionary measures in the city.

Gujarat Health minister Rushikesh Patel advised concerned officials to conduct mandatory testing of all travellers arriving in the state from abroad.

India has reported 4 cases of BF.7 variant of Omicron, the strain driving the current COVID surge in China. Two of these cases have been detected in Gujarat.

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has appealed to the people to follow COVID-appropriate behaviour with immediate effect.

Union Health minister Mansukh Mandaviya has asked states to remain alert and create awareness about following COVID-appropriate behaviour.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself held a COVID review meeting on Thursday.
