New Delhi: A leading Islamic cleric has issued a fatwa (religious order) asking Muslims to get tested for COVID-19 if they show any symptoms for the disease.
“It is not permissible to hide it (disease). If people do not get their treatment and tests done…it is absolutely against Sharia law,” said the fatwa by Maulana Khalid Rashid Farangi Mahali of Darul Uloom Farangi Mahal, Lucknow.
“Allah has said in Quaran that if someone saves another person’s life then it is the same as saving many lives. So, if someone is infected from coronavirus then it is important for that person to get treated. And if that person does not do so, other people’s lives will be at stake,” a report in India Today quoted Mahali as saying.
The fatwa, which was was issued on Thursday, came amid Nizamuddin Markaz turning out to be India’s biggest coronavirus hotspot.
Many other clerics have reportedly advised people to stay home and avoid going to Friday prayers as well.
