Vaccination of pregnant women could also protect their babies against COVID-19.
According to a study in Israel, antibodies were detected in all 20 women who received both doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine during their third trimester of pregnancy and in their newborns, through placental transfer.
“Our findings highlight that vaccination of pregnant women may provide maternal and neonatal protection from SARS-CoV-2 infection,” observed researchers from Jerusalem’s Hadassah-University Medical Center.
The report of the study, conducted last month, was reported by Israeli media. It was posted on an online distribution service for unpublished research manuscripts that have not been peer-reviewed yet.
The researchers will next look to find out how long the vaccine-triggered antibodies last in the babies.
