New York: All adults in the US will now be eligible to get Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccine booster doses.
Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the agency responsible for control and supervision of COVID-19 vaccines in America, on Friday took a call to expand the Joe Biden government’s efforts to provide further protection. Coronavirus infections are expected to rise during the upcoming holiday season in winter.
Once the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) agrees with FDA’s decision, millions of more Americans who are 18 years or older can have three doses of protection — six months after their last dose. Those who got the one-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine can opt for a second dose as well.
According to CDC, over one-third of fully-vaccinated senior citizens in the US have already received their booster doses, while 17% of fully-vaccinated adults overall have had an additional shot of vaccine.
The UK and some other countries have also started providing booster doses to their citizens.
The World Health Organization has called it a ‘scandal’, saying that richer nations should think of economically weaker countries which are not even close to completing the first dose for their eligible populations.
