Bhubaneswar: The Commissionerate Police has warned of stern action against ‘chanda’ extortionists during Durga Puja.
The Police Commissioner has asked the twin city police officers to take action against such unscrupulous elements in the two cities during the festival time. Such persons may also face arrest, the CP added.
Complaints against extortion of ‘chanda ‘ during the puja is rampant and shopkeepers fall victim to such elements as they are forced to pay hefty amounts to local puja committees or petty collectors. Two persons were arrested in Cuttack for forcibly collecting money in the name of Durga Puja subscription from a businessman in Cuttack. They had demanded Rs 13,000 as donation for Durga Puja.
Acting on such complaints, the Police Commissionerate has requested the people to come forward and lodged complaint against such ‘chanda extortionists’ following which action will be taken immediately, said the police commissioner.
The complainant’s name will not be revealed, said the CP and added that no one will be spared.
