Jharsuguda: A team from the Crime Branch of Odisha Police reached Jharsuguda on Sunday evening to probe the firing on Health Minister Naba Das by an ASI in Brajrajnagar that led to his death.
The seven-member team led by DSP Ramesh Chandra Dora landed at Jharsuguda airport. The team comprised ballistic expert, cyber expert and officers of the Crime Branch. Arun Bothra, ADG, CID-CB also accompanied the team to supervise the investigation.
According to sources, the CB team will interrogate the ASI Gopal Das, who has been taken into custody by the police immediately after the incident, to ascertain the cause of the firing.
The ASI fired at Minister Das while the latter was going to a public function in Brajarajnagar earlier in the day. Das was hit by a bullet on left side of his chest and collapsed into his car. He was rushed by party workers and his supporters to Jharsuguda district headquarters hospital.
Later, he was airlifted to Bhubaneswar along with a medical team of specialists and life support equipment and admitted to Apollo Hospitals in the city. But he succumbed while undergoing treatment.
“The injuries were repaired, and steps were taken to improve the pumping of the heart. He was given urgent ICU care. But despite best of efforts, he could not be revived and succumbed to his injuries,” Apollo Hospitals said in a press statement.
