Bhubaneswar: Odisha Staff Selection Commission (OSSC) official Biranchi Narayan Sahoo was suspended on Monday, a couple of days after being arrested in a disproportionate assets case.

Apart from suspending Sahoo, OSSC Chairman Nirmal Chandra Mishra has recommended the state government for stringent action against him.

Sahoo, who allegedly amassing disproportionate assets amounting to Rs 3.51 crore, was the private secretary to OSSC member Jagannath Lenka. He was working with the Commission since its inception in 1994.

With the recovery of bank slips indicating huge cash deposits in bank accounts and recruitment-related admit cards from his house and mobile phone, it is being suspected that he received kickbacks from applicants.

THE ASSETS

>> A two double-storey building worth Rs 1.42 crore at Niladri Vihar

>> 14 plots in Bhubaneswar, Puri and Khurda,

>> Insurance deposits worth over Rs 56 lakh,

>> Rs 12 lakh cash and gold ornaments worth Rs 60 lakh

>> Another Rs 13 lakh cash was seized from his relative’s house.

This is not all, Sahoo had made five foreign trips along with his wife Sudhanshubala in the last 10 years. The couple had visited countries like United Arab Emirates (UAE), Malaysia, Thailand, among others, and were accompanied by their son and daughter on one such trip, anti-corruption officials said.

Sudhanshubala, an insurance agent, and Sahoo’s brother-in-law Manoranjan Sahoo have also been named in the FIR. “Many properties have been registered in the name of Sudhanshubala and Rs 13 lakh was recovered from Manoranjan’s house,” a senior official said.
