Cuttack: Barely hours after a massive fire broke out at Sun Hospital in Tulasipur area of Cuttack city on Sunday, District Collector Bhabani Shankar Chayani said there will be a probe into the incident.
Talking to the media, the collector said the probe will be conducted on the basis of the report by the Fire Service personnel on the exact cause of the fire and the fire safety measures taken by the hospital authorities.
He further said a total of 11 patients in the hospital have been shifted to other private hospitals and SCB Medical College and Hospital.
Stating that the fire has been completely brought under control, Chief Fire Officer Sukant Sethy said that as the Fire Service Department had conducted a mock drill on fire safety and trained the hospital employees, the lives of the patients could be saved.
Asked if the fire broke out due to a short-circuit, he said it cannot be ascertained at the moment. “But the hospital staff told me that the welding work was going on at the top floor when the fire broke out,” he said, adding that a total of seven fire tenders and 50 fire personnel were engaged to douse the blaze.
Asked whether the hospital had obtained the fire safety certificate, Sethy said that although the hospital authorities have adequate fire safety equipment, the Fire Service Department has not provided the fire safety certificate.
Central head of the hospital, Biswajit Sahu said the fire had struck the office at the top (fifth) floor. “I am not sure of the damage. The extent of the damage will be known after the situation is brought under the control,” he added.
CMC Commissioner, Ananya Das said there was no casualty as all the 11 patients and 38 hospital staff were evacuated safely.
