Cuttack: The Commissionerate Police have arrested four burglars for allegedly looting about 120-gram gold ornaments and Rs 1 lakh from the house of Subash Chandra Das at Bidanasi in Odisha’s Cuttack city by breaking open the window. Gold and silver ornaments worth Rs 8 lakh, Rs 15,000 in cash and a car were seized from their possession.
Those arrested have been identified as Sk Muna (35), Sajid Khan (24), Prafulla Kumar Jena (48), and Gulam Kadir Khan (28).
“The accused belong to Kendrapada and were involved in loot from several houses in Bidanasi and Choudwar area,” Cuttack DCP Prateek Singh informed on Monday.
He further said that the scientific team and dog squad were engaged in the probe. Phone records were also verified. “We got to know about a serial burglary gang of six,” he said.
The CCTV footage in which the loot was captured was widely circulated in different districts, social media and jails to identify the criminals and the investigating team was finally able to nab three burglars and the receiver Gulam on May 1.
Elaborating on their modus operandi, the DCP said that the gang would first locate a house, conduct a recce of the same and intimate all other members. “They would then reach the spot in an SUV. While three to four members would enter the house by the opening screws of the window iron grill to loot valuables, others remain inside the vehicle to keep an eye on movements of the public and police,” he said
Efforts are on to nab other accused persons, who are still at large, he added.
The gang operated in Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur and Jajpur and had reportedly looted three houses in March.
