Gold Coast: India’s weightlifters continued to bring pride after Sanjita Chanu won a gold in the women’s 53kg category. This is India’s second gold medal after Mirabai Chanu clinched one in 48kg category yesterday (April 5).
This is Sanjita’s second gold in Commonwealth Games appearance, as she won her first in the 2014 Glasgow Games.
In another record for the country, 18-year old Deepak Lather became the youngest weightlifter from the country to win a medal in the Games. Deepak won bronze in the men’s 69kg category.
With this, India so far, has a tally of four medals, all coming from weighlifting. Weighlifter P. Gururaja had won a silver yesterday.
In hockey, Indian eves registered its first victory after it defeated Malaysia 4-1 in its second match. Drag flicker Gurjit Kaur scored a brace, while skipper Rani and Lalremsiami scored a goal each.
In Badminton, India blanked Scotland 5-0 in the Mixed team event in Group A, while in cycling, India’s Manjeet Singh bowed out of medal contention after finishing 24th in men’s 4000m.
In Boxing, Naman Tanwar qualified for the quarter-finals after winning over Haruna Mhando of Tanzania.
