Glasgow: India finished fourth in the medal standings of the 2026 Commonwealth Games which concluded in the Scottish city of Glasgow on Sunday.
Their tally of 39 medals — comprising of 13 gold, 17 silver and 9 bronze – was largely due to the stunning efforts of the boxing contingent, which claimed 7 gold and 3 silver.
At the last edition of the Games, four years ago in Birmingham, India had collected 61 medals (22 gold, 16 silver, 23 bronze) to finish fourth.
India’s hopes of a 40th medal ended in heartbreak as judoka Ishroop Narang lost the bronze-medal bout to Canadian Carolie Godbout in the Women’s 57 kg weight category.
India’s aggregate was substantially less than in Birmingham, but it was still an extremely creditable show as many of their top disciplines were left out in Glasgow. With Australia pulling out as hosts, Glasgow stepped in for the 2024 Games on condition that
The top three also remained unchanged vis-à-vis Birmingham, with Australia (68 gold, 41 silver, 54 bronze) finishing way ahead of the rest, followed by England (27 gold, 43 silver, 36 bronze) and Canada (18 gold, 20 silver, 21 bronze).
Boxer Jaismine Lamboria, who won gold medal in Women’s 57 kg weight class, was named as the Indian contingent’s flagbearer at the closing ceremony of the Commonwealth Games on Sunday night, which will begin at 1.30 am (IST).
