Bhubaneswar: A fraudster from West Bengal has been arrested on charges of duping a CISF constable, posted at NTPC power plant in Kaniha in Odisha’s Angul district, of over Rs 2 lakh last month.
The accused has been identified as Munir Mian of Dalurdandh.
The constable, Sanjay Narjinari, had lodged a complaint with NTPC police on January 30 alleging that Rs 2,04,990 was deducted from his account in seven transactions after calling on a customer care number of PhonePe which he found on Google.
He had contacted the number when Rs 7000, which he had sent to his wife’s account in SBI was not credited.
According to police sources, the person who received his call asked him to download the AnyDesk and auto-forward SMS applications on his mobile phone. Sanjay soon received a message informing him about deduction of the amount from his account.
Sanjay then contacted his home branch and blocked the account. He also approached police for help. During the investigation, police found that one of the transactions worth Rs 50,000 was made to buy an electronic gift item on Flipkart Internet Pvt Limited to purchase a mobile phone and other accessories and the products were delivered in West Bengal and Jharkhand.
Further probe revealed that the mobile phone was being used by Munir, who was then apprehended by a special police team on Thursday.
