Bhubaneswar: A senior citizen in Bhubaneswar fell prey to online fraud and lost Rs 12 lakh while porting mobile number on Tuesday. His credit card details were also used by the cyberfrausters to make purchases worth Rs 80,000.

According to police sources, Sadashiv Mohanty of Sailashree Vihar had on January 12 applied to port his Airtel SIM card to BSNL. He received an SMS, stating that his BSNL SIM card will be operational from January 16 evening. To initiate the process, he was also asked to make a call to a mobile phone number.

He made the call on Tuesday and was asked to download an application and transfer Rs 10 to him towards processing charges. On completing his process, he realised that all the contact numbers on his mobile phone were deleted.

Suspecting fraud, he immediately reached the Chandrasekharpur branch of ICICI bank, where he has his savings account and found that the fraudsters had siphoned off Rs 12 lakh from his account. His credit card details were also used for shopping.
