Bhubaneswar: In yet another cyber fraud case, a woman officer of state government in Odisha capital has been duped of more than Rs one lakh.

According to sources, the woman, working as Class B officer at state Secretariat in Bhubaneswar, had gone to Saheed Nagar branch of State Bank of India (SBI) to surrender her credit card. She deposited credit card dues of Rs 6,000 as told by the bank officials before starting the process of surrender of the credit card. But the process could not be completed.

On returning home, she tried to complete the work online and surfed for SBI sites for surrender of credit card. She came across a customer care number of SBI and called up for assistance. The person, who received the call, tried to convince her of the benefits of the credit card and requested her not to surrender it.

As the woman officer insisted on returning the card and wanted to take up the matter with higher official, the person agreed. He told her that she has to give an OTP number sent to her mobile phone so that the process can be initiated. Without doubting the person or verifying his credentials, the woman gave him the OTP number.

Later, the woman officer got SMS messages that Rs 1.18 lakh had been withdrawn from her SBI account in 4 phases on the day. After realising that she had been cheated by online fraud, the woman officer filed a complaint at Cyber police station in Bhubaneswar.

The Cyber Police has launched an investigation and came to know that the complainant’s money had been transferred from her account to 3 other accounts. It has launched further investigation to trace the accused and get the money back, the sources said.

It may be noted that a senior executive of a private company in Paradip had filed complaint with cyber police on June 7 after being duped of Rs 72.6 lakh. Similarly, principal of a college in Rourkela was duped of more than Rs 8 lakh from his account while he had gone to activate his YONO account, an integrated digital banking platform of SBI, on June 1.
