Berhampur: After a deputy executive engineer in Odisha’s Berhampur was duped of over Rs 1 lakh by cyber frauds, a woman in the city has fallen victim in similar manner.
According to sources, the 35-year-old woman of Khalasi Sahi under Berhampur Town police station received a call 0n her mobile phone from an unknown number on August 4. The caller told her that if she did not pay the electricity bill immediately, power connection to her house would be disconnected by evening.
The woman agreed to make the online payment and gave serial number and CVV number of her ATM card to the caller. She then received an OTP on her mobile phone and sent it to the caller. Soon after, she received messages from Canara Bank that Rs 1,91,055 had been debited from her account through a number of withdrawals.
As the victim had not withdrawn any amount on the day, she contacted the Canara Bank about the withdrawals. The bank officials confirmed that the money had been withdrawn from her account.
Realising that she had been duped by frauds, the woman filed a complaint at cyber police station in Berhampur. The police have registered a case and launched investigation.
It may be noted that deputy executive engineer of Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC) M Nageswar Subudhi was duped of over Rs 1 lakh by cyber frauds who had also told him to make online payment of his electricity bill.
