Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday said that the super cyclone Amphan is most likely to delay the advance of the south-west monsoon.

Briefing the media in New Delhi, IMD DG Mrutyunjay Mahapatra said going by the modular study, there will be a slight delay in the arrival of the monsoon in Kerala due to the cyclone. The monsoon is expected to hit the southern state coast by June 5 this year against the normal date of June 1.

Due to its delayed arrival in Kerala, the monsoon will reach Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar and parts of Uttar Pradesh three to seven days late.

Last year, the monsoon had hit the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on May 18, two days ahead of its normal onset date of May 20 and hit Kerala coast on June 8 and covered the entire country by July 19.
