Bhubaneswar: With cyclone Arnab moving towards the coast, the Centre reviewed Odisha’s preparedness to deal with the approaching system and the state government stated that all necessary arrangements have been finalised.
During the meeting of the National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC) chaired by the Cabinet Secretary, Odisha Chief Secretary Anu Garg briefed the Centre on the state’s preparedness and the measures being taken to minimise the impact of the cyclone.
While southern Odisha is likely to be affected by the storm, senior officers have been deployed to the region to oversee preparedness and coordinate response measures, Garg said after the meeting.
The Electricity and Water Resources departments have been directed to remain on alert to deal with possible disruptions and emergencies.
The Coast Guard is also monitoring fishing activities to ensure the safety of fishermen. The state administration has confirmed that steps have been taken to ensure all fishermen return from the sea.
As part of the evacuation plan, more than 3,000 pregnant women are likely to be shifted to safer locations ahead of the cyclone to ensure their safety and access to medical care.
According to the Chief Secretary, the system is expected to recurve towards Chhattisgarh after making landfall, potentially bringing heavy rainfall to the Bastar region.
In view of the possibility of heavy rain and increased water inflows, a dedicated team has been formed to coordinate dam-water management with the Chhattisgarh government. The two states are maintaining communication so that Odisha can be informed in advance if water is released from dams.
During the meeting, the Union Cabinet Secretary also assured that the Central Government was prepared to extend all necessary assistance to Odisha to manage the situation.
The state administration is continuing its preparations, with a focus on public safety, essential services and coordination between departments.
