Cyclone Asani: Check IMD’s Rain, Wind Warning

Bhubaneswar: Odisha’s coastal districts are likely to receive light to moderate rainfall from May 10 evening till May 12 under the influence of Severe Cyclonic Storm Asani, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in a special bulletin on Monday morning.

Yellow warning

May 10

Heavy rainfall (7-11 cm) very likely to occur at one or two places over Gajapati, Ganjam and Puri districts.

May 11

Heavy rainfall (7-11 cm) very likely to occur at one or two places over Ganjam, Khurda, Puri, Jagatsinghpur and Cuttack districts.

May 12

Heavy rainfall (7-11 cm) very likely to occur at one or two places over Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Kendrapada, Bhadrak and Balasore districts.

Wind warning

Gale wind is likely to prevail, speed reaching 105-115 kmph gusting to 125 kmph, over central parts of Bay of Bengal on May 9; speed reaching 95-105 kmph gusting to 115 kmph around the system centre over westcentral and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal on May 10; speed reaching 80-90 kmph gusting to 100 kmph over northwest and adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal on May 11; and speed reaching 60-70 kmph gusting to 80 kmph over northwest Bay of Bengal on May 12.

Fishermen at sea have been advised to return to the coast by May 10 morning and not to venture into the sea along and off Odisha coast from May 11 till further notice.

Severe Cyclonic Storm Asani lay 680 km north-northeast of Puri on Monday morning and is moving northwestwards at a speed of 25 kmph, according to the latest update by the Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar.

Distant Warning Signal 2 has been hoisted at all ports in Odisha in view of the approaching cyclone.

The cyclone is very likely to move northwestwards till May 10 night and reach westcentral and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal off north Andhra Pradesh and Odisha coasts.

The season’s first cyclone is set to skip Odisha, recurving in a north-northeast direction towards West Bengal and Bangladesh off the Andhra Pradesh and Odisha coasts. Under its impact, the day temperature will come down by 3 to 4 degrees Celsius at many places in Odisha.

According to senior meteorologist Jason Nicholls, Asani will approach the Odisha coast before turning northeast around midweek. “Heavy rain and gusty winds possible along the Odisha & WestBengal coasts to Bangladesh,” he added.
