Cyclone Asani To Turn Severe In 6 Hours; Check Distance From Puri, Track & Intensity

Bhubaneswar: Cyclone Asani is expected to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm over southeast Bay of Bengal in the next 6 hours, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed in its special bulletin on Sunday.

“The cyclonic storm ‘Asani’ over southeast Bay of Bengal moved nearly northwestwards with a speed of 14 kmph during the past 6 hours and lay centered at 2.30 pm over the same region about 560 km northwest of Car Nicobar (Nicobar Islands), 470 km west of Port Blair (Andaman Islands), 850 km southeast of Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) and 930 km south-southeast of Puri (Odisha),” it said.

After intensifying into a severe cyclonic storm, it is very likely to continue to move northwestwards till May 10 evening and reach Westcentral and adjoining Northwest Bay of Bengal off North Andhra Pradesh and Odisha coasts. Thereafter, it is very likely to recurve north-northeastwards and move towards northwest Bay of Bengal off Odisha coast, it added.

RAINFALL WARNING

May 10: Light to moderate rainfall is very likely to commence from 1the evening at many places in coastal Odisha. Heavy rainfall (7 -11 cm) is very likely to occur at one or two places in Gajapati, Ganjam, and Puri.

May 11: Light to moderate rainfall is very likely at many places in coastal Odisha and heavy rainfall (7-11 cm) may occur at one or two places in Ganjam, Khurda, Puri, Jagatsinghpur and Cuttack.

May 12: Light to moderate rainfall is very likely at many places in coastal Odisha. Heavy Rainfall (7-11 cm) is expected at one or two places in Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Kendrapara, Bhadrak and Balasore.

WIND WARNING

Squally wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph is likely along and off Odisha coast on May 11 & 12.

PORT WARNING

All ports in Odisha have been asked to hoist Distant Warning Signal No.2 (DW-2).
