Cyclone Daye Triggers Heavy Rain In South, Interior Odisha

Bhubaneswar: Heavy rainfall continues in most parts of the south and interior Odisha under the influence of Cyclone Daye which crossed the Gopalpur coast at around 12.30 am on Thursday.

Talking to mediapersons here on Friday, Duty Officer of the Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar, Ramesh Chandra Nayak said the Cyclone Daye has moved in the north-west direction and now lay centred near Bhawanipatna. The cyclonic storm which is gradually moving towards Chhattisgarh will be weakened in the next 12-24 hours. But as it is still on Odisha, there will be heavy to very heavy rainfall in the southern Odisha districts of Ganjam, Gajapati, Koraput, Nabarangpur and Malkangiri in the next 24 hours with a wind speed of about 60-70kmph.

He also said that there would be widespread rainfall in almost all parts of Odisha till 9 am on Saturday. Nayak further said that since the wind speed in the coastal pockets is now  30-40 kmph, the fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea along the Odisha coast and the central Bay of Bengal till next 24 hours.

As a precautionary measure, distant cautionary signal no-3 has been hoisted in all the ports in Odisha, he added.
