Cyclone Fani: Evacuation Of People From Coastal Low-Lying Areas Begins In Odisha

Bhubaneswar: As the extremely severe cyclonic storm Fani approaches Odisha’s coast, NDRF and ODRAF teams have started evacuating people from low-lying areas.

The evacuation process was started from Chandrabhaga to Chandbali.

The office of the Special Relief Commissioner informed that:

  1. 25,425 people of 11 districts had been shifted to safer places by 10.30am on Thursday.
  2. Around 2.5 lakh people had been shifted to safer places by 2.30pm.
  3. Around 3.31 lakh people had been evacuated by 3pm.
  4. Around 11.54 lakh had been shifted to 879 cyclone shelters by the evening.
  5. Special emphasis was being given to women, the elderly, differently-abled persons and children.
  6. Around 5,97,000 polythenes had been stocked.
  7. One lakh food packets prepared.
  8. Food will be airdropped if necessary.
  9. 28 NDRF teams prepared.
  10. Special Relief Commissioner said special care to be provided to pregnant women.
  11. Around 2.4 lakh persons from Puri will be evacuated.
  12. 60,000 people from Cuttack to be evacuated.
  13. According to latest reports, a maximum of 1.82 lakh people in Ganjam district have been evacuated out of 2.81 lakh planned to be shifted. There are 104 shelters and 992 cyclone/flood shelters in Ganjam district.
  14. In Jajpur, 29,500 people have been evacuated. In Bhadrak 24,600 people, in Jagatsinghpur 20,000 people, in Puri 22,250 people, in Kendrapara 50,000 people, in Cuttack 1,00,000 people, in Khurda 1,19,567 people, in Mayurbhanj 70,000 people, in Kandhamal 4,000 people, in Gajapati 25,217 people, in Nayagarh 30,498 people, in Rayagada 10,141 people and in Koraput 500 people have been evacuated.

Steps Taken By Health Department

  1. Expectant mothers have been shifted to safer places. The health department has been providing food to them.
  2. The health department is running a 24-hour control room, where employees have been working in shifts.
  3. The department has also been providing bleaching powder, Halogen tablets, ORS packets and diarrhoea medicine to district headquarters hospitals.
  4. Two mobile vans have been provided to each block to help the people.
