Cyclone Hamoon To Form In Bay Of Bengal Today; Rain, Squall@70 Kmph Along Odisha Coast

Bhubaneswar: With a cyclonic storm brewing in Bay of Bengal, light to moderate rainfall is likely at many places in coastal Odisha from October 23-25, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Monday.

“The Deep Depression over westcentral Bay of Bengal moved northeastwards during past 6 hours with a speed of 8 kmph and lay centered at 5.30 am today over the same region, about 400 km south of Paradip (Odisha), 550 km south-southwest of Digha (West Bengal) and 690 km south-southwest of Khepupara (Bangladesh). It is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm during next 12 hours,” the weather agency said in its morning bulletin.

If this system intensifies into a cyclone, it will be called Hamoon, a name given by Iran based on the formula followed for naming cyclones in the Indian Ocean Region. The word has multiple Islamic meaning, including forest, desert and wilderness.

As per the IMD’s latest projected cyclone track, Hamoon would weaken as it nears the Bangladesh coast. “It is very likely to move nearly north-northeastwards and cross Bangladesh coast between Khepupara and Chittagong around October 25 evening as a Deep Depression.”

Senior scientist of regional centre here Umasankar Das told that it will be a very weak system and have a marginal impact on Odisha, bringing in light to moderate rain. “The system at the sea will be around 200 km from the state’s coast,” he added.

According to the MeT office, light to moderate rain/thundershower is very likely at a few places in coastal Odisha and at one or two places in Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Angul, Dhenkanal, Boudh, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri during next 24 hours.

On October 24, light to moderate rain/thundershower at many places in north coastal Odisha, at a few places in districts of south coastal Odisha, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Dhenkanal and at one or two places in remaining parts of the state.

The IMD has forecast light to moderate rain/thundershower at a few places in coastal Odisha, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Dhenkanal and at one or two places in rest districts of Odisha on October 25. Light to moderate rain/ thundershower may continue at one or two places in Mayurbhanj, Balasore and Bhadrak during the subsequent 24 hours.

Dry weather is likely in Odisha thereafter, it added.

Meanwhile, the Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm ‘Tej’ over Westcentral Arabian Sea continued to move northwestwards with a speed of 13 kmph during past 6 hours and lay centered at 5.30 am over the same region, about 200 km north-northwest of Socotra (Yemen), 300 km south of Salalah (Oman) and 240 km southeast of Al Ghaidah (Yemen). “It is very likely to continue to move northwestwards and weaken into a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm during next 6 hours.
