Cyclone Jawad Inches Closer: Maximum Wind Speed To Reach 95-105 kmph, Odisha Districts On Rain Alert; Check Latest Details

Bhubaneswar: Moving at 6 kmph, Cyclone Jawad lay centered over the Bay of Bengal about 230 km from Visakhapatnam, 340 km from Gopalpur, 410 km from Puri and 490 km from Paradip, according to the latest bulletin issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) at 8.30 am on Saturday.

Cyclone Jawad is likely to hit the Puri coast on December 5 afternoon.

“It is likely to move north-northwestwards and reach west-central Bay of Bengal off north Andhra Pradesh–south Odisha coasts on December 4 morning. Thereafter, it is likely to recurve north-north-eastwards, move along the Odisha coast reaching near Puri on December 5 noon and weaken gradually. Subsequently, it is likely to continue to move north-north-eastwards along Odisha coast towards West Bengal coast and weaken further,” the IMD said.

The wind speed is 75-85 kmph, expected to gust to 95-105 kmph as the cyclone progresses today, the IMD said.

The IMD has forecast squally winds, speeds reaching up to 45-55 kmph and gusting to 65 kmph, along and off north Andhra Pradesh-Odisha coasts today. It will gradually increase to 55-65 kmph gusting to 75 kmph by midnight.

The wind speed will again pick up from today midnight till tomorrow noon, reaching 65-75 kmph and gusting to 85 kmph in the coastal areas. The wind speed will fall thereafter.

Heavy rainfall has been predicted in several districts in Odisha.

Red warning has been issued in four districts on December 5 – Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri and Jagatsinghpur. Heavy to very heavy rainfall has been forecast in these districts along with isolated extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 20 cm.

The Met Dept has issued yellow warning on December 4 in Koraput, Rayagada, Puri Jagatsinghpur and Kendrapada, warning heavy to very heavy rainfall.

On December 6, the Met has issued orange warning for Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Jajpur, Cuttack, and Puri. Yellow warning has been issued for Keonjhar, Angul, Dhenkanal, Nayagarh, Khuda, Ganjam and Gajapati districts.
