Bhubaneswar: The storm brewing in the Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a cyclone by early Thursday morning, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Wednesday.

“The deep depression over southeast Bay of Bengal moved north-northwestwards with a speed of 17 kmph during past 6 hours and lay centered at 17.30 hours IST over the same region, about 510 km west-southwest of Port Blair, 1320 km south-southwest of Cox’s Bazar (Bangladesh) and 1220km south-southwest of Sittwe (Myanmar),” the MeT office said in a special bulletin.

It is very likely to move north-northwestwards and intensify gradually into a cyclonic storm over the same region by early tomorrow morning. Then continuing to move north-northwestwards, it will gradually intensify further into a severe cyclonic storm by May 11 evening and very severe cyclonic storm by May 12 forenoon over central Bay of Bengal. Thereafter, it is likely to recurve gradually, move north-northeastwards from May 12 morning. It is likely to weaken slightly from 13th May evening and cross southeast Bangladesh and north Myanmar coasts between Cox’s Bazar (Bangladesh) and Kyaukpyu (Myanmar) around forenoon of May 14 with maximum sustained wind speed of 110-120 kmph gusting to 130 kmph, it added

Upon its intensification into a cyclonic storm, the system will be called Cyclone Mocha, a name suggested by Yemen. It originates from the Yemeni city Mocha (or Mokha) located on the Red Sea coast, which is known to have introduced coffee to the world over 500 years ago. Mocha is a chocolate-flavoured warm beverage that is a variant of coffee.

Speaking to the media, IMD DG Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said the system is unlikely to have any impact on either Odisha or Andhra Pradesh. “The IMD has not issued any warning for Odisha regarding wind or rainfall. West Bengal coast may experience a sustained wind speed of 40 to 50 kmph,” he added.
