Cyclone Nivar Likely To Hit TN, Puducherry Tomorrow; Heavy Rain Alert For South Odisha

New Delhi: The deep depression in the south-western Bay of Bengal has intensified into a cyclonic storm, the India Meteorological Department informed on Tuesday.

Named Cyclone Nivar, it is very likely to cross the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts on Wednesday evening with wind speeds of 100-110 km per hour (kmph), gusting to 120 kmph, ANI reported.

“Deep depression has intensified into a cyclonic storm — NIVAR over south-west Bay of Bengal — (Cyclone alert for Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts – Yellow Message),” the IMD tweeted.

Weather Forecast For Odisha

Though Cyclone Nivar would have no direct impact on Odisha, rainfall activity with isolated heavy rainfall is likely to occur in some southern districts of the state on November 25 and 26.

Wednesday (November 25)

Light to moderate rain or thundershower very likely to occur at a few places in Malkangiri, Rayagada, Gajapati, Koraput, Ganjam, Kandhamal, and at isolated places over rest districts of south Odisha.

Thursday (November 26)

Light to moderate rain or thundershower very likely to occur at many places in Malkangiri, Rayagada, Gajapati, Koraput, Ganjam, Nawarangpur and at a few places over rest districts of south Odisha.

Yellow Warning: Heavy rainfall very likely at isolated places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, and Gajapati.

Under the influence of the above system, squally weather wind speed reaching 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 Kmph likely over southwest and adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal on November 23 and it would increase gradually becoming 65-75 kmph gusting to 85 Kmph over southwest and adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal till November 25.

Fishermen have been advised not to venture into deep sea areas of southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal during this period.

Trains Short-Terminated

Earlier on Monday, the East Coast Railway (ECoR) decided to short-terminate some trains in view of the onset of Cyclone Nivar.

02898 Bhubaneswar-Pondicherry Special from Bhubaneswar on November 24 will run up to Chennai Egmore and will remain cancelled from Chennai Egmore to Pondicherry.

02897 Pondicherry-Bhubaneswar Special from Pondicherry on November 25 will originate from Chennai Egmore instead of Pondicherry to Bhubaneswar and will remain cancelled between Pondicherry and Chennai Egmore.

02868 Pondicherry-Howrah Special from Pondicherry on November 25 will originate from Villupuram instead of Pondicherry to Howrah and will remain cancelled from Pondicherry to Villupuram.
