Dhenkanal: Undeterred by poverty, a daily wager’s son from a backward village in Dhenkanal district has cleared the Odisha Civil Services examination due to patience, determination and hard work.

A resident of Katabalah village in Parjang block of the district, Munna Sethy has ranked 76the in the examination for 2020 results of which were declared on Friday by the Odisha Public Service Commission (OPSC).

Munna’s success has brought joy not only to the family but also the entire village. While his father Sabindra Sethy works as a labourer to eke out a living, mother Basanti adds to the family earnings by washing clothes of villagers.

However, Munna said paucity of money failed to deter him from working hard with perseverance and patience to achieve his goal. Taking time out of his study hours, he has also been taking tuition classes for school children in the village for the last two years.

As the family was stung by resource crunch, friends and relatives rendered necessary assistance to enable him to pursue his studies. “My friends always stood by me in thick and thin. They extended emotional, psychological and financial support all through,” he said.

With the support of others, Munna had completed graduation in commerce from Ravenshaw University and joined Utkal University for post-graduation, but failed to complete PG course due to health issues.

“Thereafter, I stayed in village and started preparing for civil services. Finally, I have cleared the exam with 76 rank in my 4th attempt. I got all forms of support from my parents and villagers,” he said.

Happy over son’s success, Basanti said, “Munna suffered a lot due to many problems. He could not complete his PG due to ill health. However, he never lost hope and worked hard with patience and determination for the civil services examination. Now, his hard work has yielded result.”

Equally happy are the villagers. “People in our village and nearby areas are extremely happy after the success of Munna, who is known for his sincerity, sober nature and good behavior,” said Jaladhar Pradhan, a villager.

Despite poverty, Munna never gave up and continued to prepare for the examination with sincerity and determination, he said, adding that his success will definitely act as an inspiration for youngsters in the area.
