Bhubaneswar: A week after the murder of an elderly woman at Khandagiri Bari area on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar, the Commissionerate Police on Tuesday claimed to have solved the case with the arrest her daughter-in-law.
The accused, identified as Baisakhi, is suspected to have slit her mother-in-law’s throat over her extra-marital affair, fearing that the victim might expose her. The weapon used in the crime was recovered from septic tank of the house, sources said.
On August 15 evening, the 60-year-old woman, Mada Palei, was found with her throat slit while her daughter-in-law was lying unconscious by her side.
Mada Palei belonged to Indragarh village under Belaguntha police limits in Ganjam district. She was under treatment here having sustained some head injuries back home during a robbery bid on July 1. After being discharged from hospital, he was staying with her elder son Rabindra, who works as a driver, at Khandagiri Bari. Mada’s younger son, who was visiting her, found his mother’s throat slit and his sister-in-law unconscious on returning home after fetching medicines.
The victim’s daughter had then pointed fingers at her sister-in-law, and stated that neighbours had seen the latter closing the door of the house.
Baisakhi, who was undergoing treatment at AIIMS-Bhubaneswar, was arrested after being discharged from the hospital, the sources added.
