Sonepur: Two days after a 12-hour Binika bandh call by the BJP, the Congress on Monday observed dawn-to-dusk shutdown in the town over the same demand for filling up vacant doctor posts in the local community health centre and other hospitals in Sonepur district.
While shops, markets, commercial establishments, educational institutions and offices remained closed, vehicles stayed off the road at several places to avoid any untoward incident.
The party members staged demonstrations and blocked key junctions in the town by burning tyres.
Bar association and traders’ unions have extended their support to the bandh.
“Posts of doctors are lying vacant at different hospitals in Binika and nearby areas of the district since long. This has become a major problem here as people are deprived of quality healthcare facilities. Despite repeated requests by several organisations and locals, the district administration has failed to appoint adequate number of doctors,” one of the agitators said.
On August 11, the BJP had called for a bandh over the same demand and members of journalists’ association and traders had supported it.
