Bengaluru: India walloped Sri Lanka by 238 runs in the second and final Test on Monday to complete a 2-0 series whitewash.
India had won the opening Test in Mohali by an innings and 222 runs.
Chasing an improbable 447 for victory on a bowler-friendly track, Sri Lanka resumed on Day 3 of the day/night Test at 28 for 1 and put up a spirited resistance thanks to captain Dimuth Karunaratne’s brilliant century.
Karunaratne added 97 runs for the second wicket with overnight partner Kusal Mendis. But once Ravichandran Ashwin broke the partnership by having Mendis stumped by Rishabh Pant for 54, the floodgates opened.
Karunaratne went on to notch up his 14th Test century before being castled by an express delivery from Jasprit Bumrah.
Sri Lanka were eventually bowled out for 208, after having managed just 109 in the first innings, to hand India a massive with a session and two days to spare.
Pace spearhead Bumrah (3/23) and senior spinner Ashwin (4/55) were India’s bowling heroes, bagging 8 and 6 wickets in the match, respectively.
Shreyas Iyer was named Man of the Match for excellent knocks of 92 and 67, while wicketkeeper-batsman Pant was adjudged Man of the Series.

In the course of his spell in the second innings, Ashwin took his Test tally to 442 in 86 matches. The Indian went past South African pacer Dale Steyn’s tally of 439 to be the 8th highest wicket-taker in Test cricket.
