Day Temp Nosedives In Odisha After Spells Of Nor’wester Rain, Yellow Alert Continues

Bhubaneswar: Many parts of Odisha, including state capital Bhubaneswar, got a respite from days of sizzling temperature and sultry conditions after spells of rain accompanied by thunderstorm and gusty wind, which brought the mercury levels down by several notches in the last couple of days.

Some places in Balangir, Nuapada and Bargarh continued to experience light to moderate rain with thunderstorm and lightning on Tuesday morning. The Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre has issued yellow warning for these districts and people advised to keep a watch on the weather till 1 pm and accordingly move to safer places.

On Monday (April 8), the day temperature plummeted to 34.3°C in Bhubaneswar. It was a drop of almost 10 degrees since April 5 when it was the 6th hottest place in Asia at 43.5°C. Cuttack recorded 33.4 degree Celsius in the last 24 hours. Bargarh (25), Sambalpur (25.8), Hirakud (26.1), Koenjhar (26.8), Rourkela (27), and Sonepur (27.8) also saw significant drop in the maximum temperature. The temperature was 12.8 degrees below normal in Sambalpur.

While thunderstorm and lighting warning continues for 2 more days, the day temperature is also expected to gradually rise by 2-3°C in the next 3 days.

The weather agency has issued yellow warning of thunderstorm with lightning for one or two places in Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, and Rayagada districts from 8.30 am of Tuesday to 8.30 am on Wednesday. Light to moderate rain/thundershowers may also occur at one or two places in Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Rayagada ,Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, and Bargarh.

On April 10, thunderstorm with lightning is likely at one or two places in Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, and Rayagada districts. Light to moderate rain/thundershower may also occur at one or two places in Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Keonjhar, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Mayurbhanj, and Dhenkanal.

Light to moderate rain/thundershower may continue at one or two places in Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, and Rayagada on April 11 and Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Kalahandi, and Gajapati on April 12.
