Death Of 5 Elephants In 8 Days Raises Concern Among Wildlife Lovers In Odisha

Bhubaneswar: Rising number of elephants’ death in Odisha in last few days has raised concern among wildlife lovers. As many as five elephants have died in Dhenkanal and Angul districts.

Three tuskers including two females and a young elephant have died in Dhenkanal Forest Division between October 23 and 30. While two died due to natural reasons, the cause of the death of another elephant is yet to be ascertained, TNIE quoted DFO Prakash Chandra Gogineni as saying.

The young male elephant died while being treated for septicemia caused by dislocation of the hip bone in Lahada reserve forest On October 23. Another 18-year-old female elephant died in the same area suspected for same reason on October 30.

Similarly, a 20-year-old female elephant was found dead in Ramei forest reserve on October 28. As the cause of its death could not be confirmed, body parts have been sent to OUAT for confirmation, the DFO said.

In Angul district, two elephants were found dead on October 23. One elephant was found dead near Dihataila under Kanihna Forest Range. It was suspected to have come in contact with live electric wire and died.

In the second case, carcass of a wild tusker was recovered from a paddy field near Jokapani village under Palalhara Forest Range in the district. The tusker is suspected to have died of some disease.
