Declare Holidays From May 2: Govt Tells Educational Institutions

Bhubaneswar: Taking no chances in view of Cyclone Fani’s threatening movements, the Odisha government on Wednesday asked all educational establishments to shut down from Thursday May 2 till further orders. “All the examinations should be rescheduled,” special relief commissioner Bishnupada Sethy said.

Official sources said, though examinations are underway in different colleges and universities the government doesn’t want to take any risk considering Odisha’s history of experiencing severe cyclones.

He noted that despite government orders some schools were yet to declare summer holidays (made effective since April 18) and requested district collectors to issue notices to those schools and ensure compliance.

Sources further said several private schools, including certain well-known schools, are flouting government orders and continuing to hold classes on different pretexts. Students are being asked to come in ‘home dress’ for ‘extra classes’. “We cannot tolerate such attitude especially when a cyclone is approaching,” an officer said.
