Bhubaneswar: The wholesale vegetable market at Unit I in Bhubaneswar will soon a new location. It will be shifted to Bhagabanpur, on the outskirts of the city.
The move will help decongest the present area which is located in the heart of the city.
The decision was taken at a meeting of Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation and Housing and Urban Development Department on Thursday. Modalities for shifting the market were also chalked out at the meeting.
For the purpose, 10 acre land has been identified and earmarked at Bhagbanpur on the outskirts of the city where a cold storage and unloading facility will also be created, a BMC official told reporters.
Welcoming the decision, Raw Vegetable Business Association members said they have no disagreement if the place is has proper modern amenities along with water, electricity and road connectivity.
Located a few meters away from AG Square and near the Capital Police Station, the area gets highly congested during peak business hours leading to traffic jams.
Set up in 1957, about 49 wholesale vegetable vendors are doing business in the market. More than 200 trucks transport vegetables from the market to various places in the state.
