New Delhi: The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has been granted deemed university status, Union Education minister Dharmendra Pradhan announced on Friday.
Pradhan made the announcement to mark the 63rd foundation day of NCERT.
Last September, NCERT had approached University Grants Commission (UGC) seeking ‘Deemed University’ status. The council had applied in ‘de navo’ category.
According to UGC rules, those institutes were granted the deemed to be university status under the “de novo ‘’ category which specialise in unique and emerging areas of knowledge.
Thanks to its new status, NCERT will now be able to offer its own graduate, postgraduate and doctoral degrees, and have autonomy in terms of introduction of programmes, course structure, conducting examinations and management.
NCERT is currently offering graduate and postgraduate programmes for teachers training at its Regional Institute of Education (REI) centres which are affiliated to local universities.
REIs till now could bring in a new course only after getting approval from affiliated universities.
