Deep Depression To Cross Odisha Coast Near Puri By Noon Today; Check Rain & Wind Warnings

Bhubaneswar: The Depression over northwest and adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal has intensified into Deep Depression, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Monday.

“The Deep Depression over northwest and adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal moved slowly north-northwestwards with a speed of 8 kmph during past 6 hours and lay centered at 5.30 am over the same region, about 70 km southeast of Puri (Odisha), 140 km east of Gopalpur (Odisha), 120 km south-southwest of Paradip (Odisha), 170 km south-southwest of Chandbali (Odisha), 240 km east-northeast of Kalingapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) and 290 km south-southwest of Digha (West Bengal),” according to a special bulletin.

It is very likely to move nearly northwestwards and cross Odisha coast near Puri by noon of September 9. Thereafter, it is very likely to move west-northwestwards across Odisha and Chhattisgarh during the subsequent 2 days.

The system is under continuous surveillance by Doppler Weather Radars at Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur, it added.

Earlier in the day, the weather agency had warned of moderate rain/thundershower with one or two intense spells of rain in some parts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Nabarangpur, Ganjam, Gajapati and Kandhamal till 10.10 am. It also issued yellow warning of light to moderate rain/thundershower with lightning for some parts of Khurda (including Bhubaneswar), Puri, Nuapada, Cuttack (including Cuttack city), Bargarh, Jajpur, Angul, Boudh, Jagatsinghpur, Bhadrak and Nayagarh. People were asked to keep a watch on the weather and accordingly move to safer places to protect themselves from lighting strikes.

According to Sunday’s bulletin, scattered heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm) with isolated extremely heavy rainfall (>20cm) may occur in Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Khurda, Cuttack and Dhenkanal districts on September 9. Heavy to very heavy rainfall may also occur at isolated places in Ganjam, Koraput, Kandhamal, Balangir, Bargarh, Boudh, Sonepur, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Nayagarh, Angul and Sambalpur. There is also a heavy rainfall warning for Nuapada, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Deogarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Rayagada, Gajapati, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Badharak and Balasore.

The intensity of rain is likely to gradually decrease thereafter.

“Squally weather with wind speed reaching 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph is likely over northwest and adjoining northeast & central Bay of Bengal and along & off Odisha coast till morning of September 10 and decrease gradually thereafter. Squally weather with wind speed reaching 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph may also prevail over coastal districts of Odisha on September 9 and 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph over interior districts of north Odisha on September 10 and decrease gradually thereafter,” it further said.
