Bhubaneswar: The Deep Depression over northwest Bay of Bengal is expected to cross Odisha coast near Puri during the next 3 hours, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed in its 11 am bulletin on Monday.
“The Deep Depression over northwest and adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal moved nearly north-northwestwards with a speed of 10 kmph during past 6 hours and lay centered at 8.30 am over northwest Bay of Bengal, about 50 km east-southeast of Puri (Odisha), 90 km southwest of Paradip (Odisha), 140 km east-northeast of Gopalpur (Odisha), 140 km south-southwest of Chandbali (Odisha), 260 km east-northeast of Kalingapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) and 260 km south-southwest of Digha (West Bengal),” the weather agency said.
It further stated that the system is likely to move nearly northwestwards and cross Odisha coast near Puri during the next 3 hours. “Continuing to move further northwestwards across Odisha, it is likely to maintain its intensity of Deep Depression till evening and weaken gradually into a Depression by midnight. Thereafter, it is likely to move westnorthwestwards across Chhattisgarh during subsequent 24 hours,” it added.
Under its influence, Odisha is likely to experience extremely heavy rainfall during the next 24 hours. Red warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm) at a few places with isolated extremely heavy rainfall (>20cm) has been sounded for Ganjam, Kandhamal, Nayagarh, Khurda, Balangir, Boudh and Puri till 8,30 am on Tuesday. Heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm) may occur at isolated places in Cuttack, Angul, Dhenkanal, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada, Sonepur, Bargarh, Nuapada, Kalahandi, Rayagada, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Malkangiri, Gajapati, and Sambalpur districts. There is also yellow warning of heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) for isolated places in Bhadarak, Keonjhar, Jajpur, Deogarh, Jharsuguda, and Sundargarh.
WIND WARNING
The IMD said that squally weather with wind speed reaching 55-65 kmph gusting to 75 kmph, prevailing over northwest and adjoining northeast & central Bay of Bengal and along & off Odisha coast, is likely to continue till noon. “It is likely to decrease, gradually becoming 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph by evening.
Similarly, Squally weather with wind speed is likely to become 55-65 kmph gusting to 75 kmph by noon and decrease gradually thereafter becoming 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 Kmph by evening.
FLASH FLOOD
“Low to moderate flash flood risk likely in Angul, Balangir, Balasore, Bargarh, Boudh, Bhadrak, Cuttack, Deogarh, Dhenkanal, Jagatsinghapur, Jajpur, Jharsuguda, Kalahandi, Kendrapada, Kandhamal, Khurda, Koraput, Mayurbhanj, Nabarangapur, Nuapada, Puri, Sambalpur, Sonepur and Sundargarh districts. Surface runoff/inundation may occur at some fully saturated soils and low-lying areas in these districts.”
The rains may lead to significant rise in water level of rivers and cause flash flood/waterlogging in low-lying areas, inundation of agriculture field and mudslides/landslides in vulnerable hilly areas. There is also a possibility of some damage to un-metaled roads and kutcha houses. Waterlogging may also occur in underpass road and there could be reduction of visibility causing traffic congestion in urban areas.
SEA CONDITION
Rough to very rough sea condition over Northwest and adjoining Northeast & Central Bay of Bengal and along & off Odisha coast till evening and rough sea condition on September 10. It is likely to improve gradually thereafter.
PORT WARNING
Local Cautionary Signal No-3 (LC-3) to be hoisted at all ports of Odisha.
FISHERMEN WARNING
Fishermen have advised not to venture into northwest and adjoining northeast & central Bay of Bengal; along & off Odisha coast till September 11 morning.
The intensity of rain is also likely to gradually drop from September 10 when orange warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall has been issued for Bargarh, Nuapada, and Jharsuguda districts. Heavy rainfall is also likely at isolated places in Balangir, Sonepur, Sambalpur, and Sundargarh.
Heavy rainfall may continue at isolated places in Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, and Sundargarh on September 11. There is no rain warning thereafter.
