Bhubaneswar: The deep depression, which crossed the coast near Digha in West Bengal on Friday evening, lay centered about 220 km east-northeast of Jharsuguda in Odisha on Saturday morning, the India Meteorological Department (IMD)’s regional centre in Bhubaneswar said in an update.
“The deep depression over coastal areas of West Bengal and adjoining north Odisha moved west-northwestwards during the past six hours at a speed of 18 kmph and lay centered at 5:30 am Saturday over south Jharkhand and adjoining north Odisha and West Bengal near latitude 22.5°N and longitude 86.0°E, about 40 km south-southwest of Jamshedpur (Jharkhand), about 120 km southeast of Ranchi (Jharkhand) and about 220 km east-northeast of Jharsuguda (Odisha),” the Met department said.
“It would continue to move west-northwestwards across Jharkhand and adjoining north Odisha and north Chhattisgarh towards north Madhya Pradesh during the next 24 hours and weaken gradually,” it further said.
Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) Pradeep Kumar Jena said the deep depression was likely to move out of Odisha by Saturday afternoon.
The IMD has issued heavy rainfall warning on the upper catchment areas of the Mahanadi river in Chhattisgarh under the influence of the system on August 20.
Heavy rainfall pounded north Balasore, Mayurbhanj and Bhadrak districts on Friday night after the deep depression crossed the coast and moved inland.
