New Delhi: An Assembly panel on peace and harmony on Tuesday decided to summon Facebook officials. The committee initiated proceedings over complaints about the Facebook’s alleged “deliberate and intentional inaction to contain hateful content” in India, said an official statement.
The development came following a report by the Wall Street Journal that cited interactions with unnamed Facebook insiders claiming a senior India policy executive’s intervention in internal communication to do away with a permanent ban on BJP MLA from Telangana. The particular MLA had allegedly made communally charged posts.
“It was unanimously decided by the committee, upon the revelations and insights gathered by the witnesses, that Facebook officials must be called upon to carry out a painstaking investigation into the allegations made by the complainants which were supported by the witnesses as well as the depositions of key witnesses summoned,” said the statement.
The panel will “soon issue notices to top officials of Facebook” to examine them on record, the statement added.
