Kolkata: Cricketer Abishek Porel, who has played for Bengal and for Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League (IPL) has been arrested after a medical student accused him of rape.

Porel was arrested by the Mogra police station, in the Hooghly district of West Bengal, on Tuesday. The cricketer is a resident of the Hooghly district.

In the complaint, the woman claimed that Porel had a sexual relationship with her after promising marriage. He refused to marry her later. This amounts to rape.

A case has been registered against Abishek under multiple sections of the BNS and IT Act, including Sections 69, 311, 318, 66 and 72. He will be produced before the Chinsurah court later in the day.

“The complainant, who studies medicine in Karnataka had registered a complaint at the Mogra police station on June 23 against Porel, alleging that the cricketer engaged in a sexual relationship under the false promise of marriage, and subjected her to assault and criminal intimidation. The complaint was filed by the woman and her mother, which subsequently led to an investigation,” an official said, as reported by Hindustan Times.

She and Porel had been in a three-year relationship, and the differences surfaced last year, after which the latter started “distancing” himself from her, the woman has alleged in her complaint. She even alleged that Porel had promised to marry her but is now unwilling to do so.

Porel had denied the charges after the complaint was lodged. It was an extortion attempt, the cricketer has claimed.
