New Delhi: A Delhi court on Friday stayed execution of the four death row convicts in the 2012 Nirbhaya gang-rape and murder case till further orders
Additional Sessions Judge Dharmender Rana approved the plea filed by the convicts, seeking a stay on their execution on February 1
On January 17, the trial court had issued death warrants for the second time for the execution of all the four convicts in the case — Mukesh Singh (32), Pawan (25), Vinay Sharma (26) and Akshay Singh (31) — at Tihar jail at 6 am on February 1. Earlier, on January 7, the court had fixed January 22 as the hanging date.
With Vinay’s mercy plea still pending before the President, their counsel AP Singh had urged the court to adjourn the executions “sine die”.
The victim’s mother Asha Devi told ANI that the lawyer of the convicts had challenged her saying that the four will never be executed. “I will continue my fight. The government will have to execute the convicts,” she said.
